Sharing Is Caring: Round Two Of Road Sharing Tips

In our round one of this article, Sharing Is Caring: Road Sharing Tips, we discussed important tips for drivers to share the road with pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists. Now, we take the reverse approach for others to ensure they are also considering their own safety.

Pedestrians

As a pedestrian it is important to make sure that you are obeying the laws of the road and using signs and signals appropriately. Crosswalks and crossing signals are there specifically to protect pedestrians while on the road, so use them. When you are in a crosswalk, drivers, motorcyclists, and bicyclists know to look for any pedestrians and should be yielding to give the pedestrian the right of way.

It is also important for pedestrians to do their part in making sure they will be able to be visible. If you are walking at night, make sure to wear brightly colored clothes or a reflective vest so you will be able to be spotted. It might not be the trendiest apparel, but it will keep you safe.

Bicyclists / Motorcyclists

When on the road, bicyclists and motorcyclists have the same rights and responsibilities that a driver has. A bicyclist or motorcyclist should be correctly following posted street signs and signals and using road markings to determine proper passing. If there is a bike lane available, a bicyclist should always use the bike lane. Bicyclist and motorcyclists should also always be riding in the same direction as and with the flow of normal vehicle traffic.

It is important for bicyclists and motorcyclists to ride defensively, taking the assumption that other drivers may not be able to see them, and doing what they are able to protect themselves. Just as it is important for a pedestrian to do what they can to make themselves visible, it is also important for bicyclists and motorcyclists. Once again make sure to wear brightly colored clothes or a reflective vest while riding at night, and also make sure your bike has a headlight and taillight, and always wear a helmet. A bicyclist or motorcyclist should also make sure they are not being distracted while riding – keep out headphones and avoid the use of other electronic devices while riding. Bicyclists and motorcyclists also have the responsibility to be aware of pedestrians and to consider pedestrian safety while riding.
